Fire Pit

IMG_1380 (1)

There’s nothing finer than cooking a meal in a fire pit. We did it in our normal wood fired barby so often that I decided to build a dedicated fire pit. I get the fire going about 3pm and keep burning fuel until about 6, then we’ve got a good body of hot coals. A naked flame is no good, it’ll burn the meal. Dig a bit of depression in the coals, drop the ovens in and then shovel some coals on the lid. Leave that for about an hour and you’ll end up with the best lamb, beef or chicken and veges you’ll ever eat. Good luck.

It’s no secret that I love dogs. I’ve had a dog since I was born. Barney, Buffy, Clarie, Lizzy and Rosie. Rosie is still going at 12 and Lizzy is stuffed and sitting on the stairs at home.  Training a dog to me is very important for the dog and the owner. If a dog doesn’t obey your basic commands, like come, stay, sit, they’re going to be running around like a mad dog in the wrong situations. All good for the park or beach, but no good when you’re at a barby or you’ve got friends over. Well trained dogs get to go everywhere with you. If they’re out of control, you’ll tend to leave them at home. Also, well trained dogs don’t get run over. Love your dog but be firm in the first 12 months and you’ll have a great dog for 14 years or so. And remember, they’re DOGS!

Mudgee is a cold place, so firewood collection is a big job that needs to be done on a regular basis. We’ve got plenty of fallen timber all over the property. So up the mountain we go in a couple of utes and a couple of chain saws and of course the whole family. We load the utes up chocka block and sometimes a trailer as well, then back home for the splitting. I’ve also got a big heavy duty logsplitter. We form a big production line to split all the logs and stack them. I love my fires inside and out, so we go through a fair bit each winter.
